In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
